Jim Gola - Fine Artist
The design of custom residences has been my primary mode of earning a living for the past 40 years. Many professional designers are involved in other forms of artistic pursuits. I am no exception. These pursuits have traveled alongside the one that has put the bread and butter on our table. I have exercised a continuous involvement with most forms of graphic art during my career,
in particular, that of my first love, oil painting.
I am an avid admirer of the late great American landscape artists George Inness and Thomas Moran along with the catalyst for my love of fine art, Michael William Harnett. Harnett almost exclusively practiced the art of still life oil painting. For the past forty years I have digested much of the original work of these artists.
Studying original paintings has been the basis of my formal schooling. Here I continue to learn about painting surfaces, the various techniques of paint application along with the use of color and values.
I find it ironic that the landscape painter George Inness had no time for his contemporary, Michael Harnett. Inness actually publicly penned his displeasure with Harnett's work. Although the subject matter each painted was at odds, I personally see strong similarities in their work - In particular, the similarity of their use of color and values. I hope a little of each of them has rubbed off on me.
